During the summer of 2008 KUCTC sponsored its first TearcherTech intern. It was a rewarding experience for the KUCTC staff as well as the elementary school teacher. It is a program we anticipate participating in each summer.
The TeacherTech transforms teaching and learning by connecting Greater Kansas City area K-12 teachers with 8-week, paid, summer externships in local area businesses, academic institutions and research facilities. The program provides employers with top-notch summer employees while enhancing teachers with exposure to real-world applications in the mathematics, engineering, technology, and science fields—knowledge that can be readily incorporated into their classrooms.
KUCTC started hosting law externs in 2005 and typically places an interested candidate in each of its Lawrence and KUMC campus offices during the fall and spring semesters. Candidates are usually recommended by faculty affiliated with the externship program at the KU School of Law or UMKC School of Law. Course credit is provided in lieu of salary. Legal externs are responsible for drafting confidential disclosure agreements and preparing license agreements based on negotiations among KU, KUMC and third party companies and/or individuals. Externs also act as liaisons between campus researchers and inventors and intellectual property/ patent attorneys at major firms across the nation.
